Earlier this month on May 8, FLO hosted its annual Information Literacy Symposium at Emerson College. This year's theme was "In the Face of Adversity", centered around the topics of promoting library activism, combating mis/disinformation, building diverse and inclusive collections and library spaces, supporting community outreach and faculty engagement, and more.
Keynote speakers Vivienne Piroli and Laura Saunders of Simmons University presented on the newly created Simmons University Center for Information Literacy, speaking about challenges and barriers to student learning and information access in addition to the development of the center, its current research and curriculum development, and how it plans to engage faculty, students, professionals and allied organizations to promote the development of information literacy skills across communities. The presentation also featured interactive polling and space for audience participation.
Following the keynote, community members Dawn Stahura (Salem State) Michael Dello Iacono (Suffolk), Catherine Fahey (Salem State), Ryan Green (Middlesex Community College), Stacey Snyder (Berklee), and Emerson library staff gave short, engaging lightning talks about topics ranging from bringing increased diversity into library collections, academic libraries' responsibilities to democracy, curriculum mapping, bias, and building library connections with faculty.
Slides from all presentations as well as the event schedule are available to view on the Information Literacy Community of Interest page.
We would like to thank Emerson College for helping us plan and allowing us to host this event, and to all of the speakers, attendees, and planning team for their hard work and contributions.
